Sound familiar? If you’re anything like me, your brain has a tendency to wander into some pretty unhelpful territory when you least expect it. So today I want to talk about something we don’t say out loud enough: what it actually takes to feel a little more grounded in the middle of all the noise.

Why My Mind Keeps Going Back to the Same Places

I used to think that if I just thought hard enough about a problem, I’d eventually solve it. Spoiler alert: that’s not how it works. I’ve spent entire afternoons mentally rehashing things I can’t change, and let me tell you, it’s exhausting in a way that sleep doesn’t fix.

What I’ve learned is that my brain is basically a very loyal dog that keeps bringing me the same chewed-up shoe. It thinks it’s helping. It thinks that if I just look at the worry one more time, I’ll finally figure it out. But most of the time, I’m not solving anything — I’m just circling.

One thing that’s helped me is giving those thoughts a name. I literally say to myself, “Okay, that’s the worry loop again.” It sounds a little silly, but naming it creates just enough distance that I can decide whether I actually want to engage with it. Usually, I don’t.

The Small Things That Actually Help Me Reset

I’m not going to sit here and tell you to meditate for an hour every morning or journal until your hand cramps. I’ve tried both, and while they work for some people, they don’t always work for me. What I’ve found is that the tiniest shifts make the biggest difference.

Here’s what’s been helping me lately, in no particular order:

Getting outside for five minutes. Not a full walk, not a workout — just standing on my balcony and breathing. It sounds too simple to matter, but it does.

Writing things down instead of holding them in my head. Even a messy list on the back of an envelope helps. My brain stops trying to remember everything once it knows it’s written down.

Texting a friend something honest. Not “how are you,” but “hey, I’m feeling a bit off today.” The reply almost always makes me feel less alone.

Doing one small physical task. Folding laundry, wiping the counter, watering the plants. There’s something about moving my hands that quiets the noise upstairs.

I remember one afternoon last winter when I was in a complete spiral about something that, in hindsight, was pretty minor. I couldn’t shake it. So I got up, put on my shoes, and walked to the corner store for a coffee I didn’t need. By the time I got back, the thing I’d been agonizing over had shrunk to its actual size. Sometimes the fix isn’t in your head at all — it’s in your feet.

Being Kinder to Myself When I Can’t “Fix” It

Here’s the part I’m still working on: accepting that some days are just going to feel off, and that’s not a failure. I used to think that if I wasn’t feeling great, it meant I was doing something wrong — like I’d missed a step in some invisible self-care checklist. But that’s not true, and deep down I think we all know it.

Some days I’m productive and clear-headed and feel like I’ve got it together. Other days I’m distracted and a little fragile and I eat crackers for dinner. Both versions of me are allowed to exist. The goal isn’t to be okay all the time — it’s to be kind to myself on the days that aren’t okay.

If you’re reading this and feeling seen, I hope you’ll give yourself a little grace today. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t have to be calm and centered every second. You just have to keep showing up for yourself, one small moment at a time. That’s enough. It really is. 🤍

The other night I was curled up on the couch, half-watching a show, when I noticed my mind was somewhere else entirely — replaying a conversation from three days earlier and wondering if I’d said the wrong thing.
