I was curled up on the couch with my second cup of coffee, doing that thing we all do — clicking through a site I’d stumbled on, looking for an honest review of something I was thinking about buying. And the more I clicked, the weirder it got.

Every “category” I clicked took me to the exact same page. The reviews, the comparisons, the “tips and tricks,” the industry news, the so-called resources — all of it just circled back on itself like a hamster wheel. No actual content. No real opinions. Just a bunch of links pretending to be a website.

And I just sat there thinking: how many times have I fallen for this?

If you’ve ever spent twenty minutes on a site that looked legit, only to realize it was never going to tell you anything real, this one’s for you. Because I’ve learned a few things the hard way, and I’d rather save you the frustration.

What Gave It Away (The Little Red Flags I Used to Ignore)

Here’s the thing — I used to be way too trusting online. If a site had a clean layout and a promising headline, I’d settle in like I was reading a magazine. Now? I’ve got a mental checklist, and it’s saved me so much time.

With this particular site, the dead giveaway was that every single category link led to the same destination. Reviews, comparisons, tips, news, resources — different labels, identical pages. That’s not a content site. That’s a shell.

A few other things I now watch for:

Category pages that go nowhere. If “Product Reviews” doesn’t actually show you reviews, that’s your sign to close the tab.

No author, no date, no voice. Real content has a human behind it. If you can’t tell who wrote it or when, be skeptical.

Keyword-stuffed URLs. You know the ones — long strings of words jammed together that read like someone typed them into a search bar and hit go.

Links that loop back to the homepage. Click, click, click, and you’re right back where you started. Classic.

Zero original opinion. If a “review” never actually says whether something is good or bad, it’s not a review. It’s filler.

I remember once, years ago, I spent almost an hour on a site like this trying to find out whether a specific blender was worth the money. An hour! And I left knowing absolutely nothing. My coffee went cold and so did my patience.

Why This Stuff Actually Matters (More Than You’d Think)

Maybe it sounds dramatic to get worked up over a sketchy website. But here’s why I care, and why I think you should too.

When we’re searching for answers — whether it’s which product to buy, how to fix something, or what’s actually happening in an industry — we’re usually doing it because we’ve got a real question and limited time. Those empty sites waste both. They show up in search results looking helpful, and then they hand you nothing.

Worse, they can quietly erode your trust. I’ve caught myself getting cynical after too many of these dead-end clicks — assuming every site is going to disappoint me. And that’s not fair to the genuinely great creators out there who pour real effort into what they publish.

So now, when I land somewhere new, I do a quick gut-check. Does this page actually answer the question I came with? Is there a real person behind it? Can I get from point A to point B without ending up back at point A? It takes ten seconds, and it’s changed how I spend my time online.

And honestly? It’s made me appreciate the good stuff so much more. When I find a site that’s thoughtful and honest, I want to send it to every friend I have. Those are the corners of the internet worth hanging out in.

My Little Takeaway

I guess what I really want to say is this: trust your instincts, and don’t feel silly for clicking away. If a website feels like it’s wasting your time, it probably is. You don’t owe it your attention just because it showed up in a search result.

We’re all just out here trying to find real answers from real people, and that’s a completely reasonable thing to want. So the next time you land on a page that promises everything and delivers nothing, close the tab, pour yourself another coffee, and keep looking. The good stuff is out there — it just sometimes takes a little sifting to find it.

And hey, if you’ve got a site you actually trust, tell me about it. I’m always collecting the good ones. 🤍

Wait — Is That Really a Website?
