You know that feeling, right? When you click on something hoping for a little inspiration, a little honesty, and instead you get… filler. I closed my laptop, poured myself a cup of tea, and thought: I want to write about this. About what it actually feels like to land on a page that doesn’t feel like a person wrote it.

Because here’s the thing — I’ve been blogging for years now, and I’ve had my fair share of posts that felt like I was just going through the motions. It happens. Life gets busy, the ideas dry up, and suddenly you’re publishing something just to keep the streak alive. I’m not proud of it, but I’ve been there. And I think that’s exactly why I notice when someone else is doing the same thing.

What I Actually Look For When I Read a Blog

I don’t need fancy graphics or perfect grammar. I don’t need someone to have their whole life figured out. What I want is a voice. I want to feel like the person behind the screen is talking to me, not at me. When I read something that feels real, I usually find myself nodding along, or laughing out loud, or occasionally tearing up because someone put words to something I’ve felt but never said.

So when I landed on that author page at helpsqiuwhite.com, I kept waiting for that moment. And I waited. And I waited. The words were there, but the warmth wasn’t. It felt like reading a manual instead of a letter from a friend.

I think we all deserve better than that. Whether you’re a writer or a reader, you deserve content that makes you feel something.

Three Things That Make a Blog Feel Human

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and I’ve narrowed it down to a few things that I think make the biggest difference. These aren’t rules — they’re just what works for me, both as a writer and as a reader.

Specificity over generality. Tell me about the Tuesday you spilled coffee on your keyboard, not about how “life has its ups and downs.” Details are what make a story stick.

Honesty, even when it’s awkward. I’d rather read about someone’s messy kitchen than someone’s perfectly curated life. Imperfection is relatable. Perfection is exhausting.

A point of view. Have an opinion. Take a stance. Even if I disagree, I’ll respect you more for saying something than for saying nothing at all.

I remember once writing a post about my failed attempt at meal prepping. I was embarrassed to hit publish — it felt too small, too silly. But it ended up being one of my most-read posts that year. People commented saying they felt seen. That’s the magic right there. The small, honest things are the ones that connect us.

Why I Keep Coming Back to the Same Blogs

There are maybe five or six blogs I check regularly, and none of them are perfect. One of them updates sporadically. Another has typos I could probably point out if I tried. But I keep going back because they feel like friends. I know their dogs’ names. I know what they’re worried about this month. I know what they made for dinner last night, and for some reason, I care.

That’s what I want for this little corner of the internet too. I want you to feel like you’re sitting across from me at a café, not scrolling through a corporate newsletter. I want to write things that make you think, “Oh good, it’s not just me.”

So if you’re a writer, I hope you’ll keep it real. And if you’re a reader, I hope you’ll seek out the voices that feel like home. We’re all just trying to find each other in this big, noisy internet, one honest sentence at a time.

Thanks for being here.
