Can I be honest with you for a second?

Last Tuesday I found myself sitting on my kitchen floor at 9pm, phone in one hand, a half-eaten granola bar in the other, scrolling through a website that promised me the secret to getting my life together. I don’t even remember how I got there. One minute I was tidying up after dinner, the next I was five tabs deep into some random blog I’d never heard of, wondering if everyone else had figured out something I hadn’t.

You’ve been there too, right? That little pull to click one more link, read one more article, find one more answer. I used to think that was just me being curious. Now I’m starting to think it’s me being a little bit lost — and covering it up with busyness.

So today I want to talk about that. Not from some high horse, but from the kitchen floor, granola crumbs and all.

The Scroll That Never Ends

Here’s the thing about the internet: it’s designed to keep you looking. Every link leads somewhere, and somewhere always leads somewhere else. I’ve lost entire evenings this way. Not to anything meaningful — just to the feeling of almost finding something.

I remember one night I was supposed to be reading a book. Instead I ended up on a site I’d never visited before, clicking through pages of content that didn’t really speak to me, but I kept going anyway. Why? Because stopping meant sitting with the fact that I didn’t know what I actually wanted to do with my evening. Scrolling was easier than choosing.

Does that sound familiar? I think a lot of us do this. We fill the quiet with noise because the quiet asks us questions we’re not ready to answer.

We click because we’re curious — that’s fine.

We click because we’re bored — also fine.

We click because we’re avoiding something — that’s where it gets tricky.

And I’ve been guilty of all three, sometimes in the same night.

What I’m Learning to Do Instead

I’m not going to sit here and tell you to delete your apps or go on a digital detox. I tried that once. It lasted about forty-eight hours before I caved and felt worse about myself for “failing.” So no. That’s not the advice.

What’s actually helped me is smaller, kinder, more realistic.

First, I started asking myself one simple question before I click: Am I here on purpose, or did I just drift here? That’s it. No judgment, just noticing. Half the time I realize I drifted, and that awareness alone is usually enough to close the tab.

Second, I made a tiny rule for myself — if I’m going to wander online, I want it to be somewhere that actually leaves me feeling something. Inspired, comforted, curious in a good way. Not that hollow, slightly-annoyed feeling you get after twenty minutes of mindless clicking. You know the one.

Third — and this one sounds silly but it works — I keep a little note on my phone of things I actually want to look up. Real questions I have. Real topics I’m curious about. That way, when I do go online, I’m going with intention instead of just seeing where the wave takes me.

It’s not perfect. Last week I still ended up on some random site I can’t even remember now. But I noticed it faster than I used to. And I closed it sooner. That’s progress, right?

The Real Thing I’m Looking For

Here’s what I’ve figured out, and it took me a while to see it clearly: when I’m endlessly clicking around, I’m usually not looking for information. I’m looking for a feeling. I want to feel like I’m doing something, like I’m moving forward, like I’m not missing out.

But no website can give me that. Not really. That feeling comes from doing the thing, not from reading about the thing. From closing the laptop and going for a walk. From texting a friend back instead of scrolling past her message. From sitting with the quiet for five minutes and letting it be quiet.

I don’t always manage it. Some nights I still end up on the kitchen floor with my phone. But I’m learning to be gentler with myself about it. To notice, to laugh a little, and to put the phone down when I’m ready — not because I failed at some impossible standard, but because I actually want to be present for my own life.

And honestly? That’s the whole thing. Not perfection. Just coming back to yourself, again and again, with a little more kindness each time.

So if you’re reading this after a long scroll that you didn’t quite mean to take — hi. You’re not alone. Let’s put our phones down together and go do something that actually matters to us.

I’m rooting for you. 🤍

Hey friend.
