I’d been doing this for weeks — link after link, blog after blog, tab after tab. And you know what? I couldn’t tell you a single thing I’d actually learned. That’s when it hit me: I wasn’t reading to grow. I was reading to feel busy.

If you’ve ever fallen down that same rabbit hole, this one’s for you.

Not Every Source Deserves Your Time

Here’s something I wish someone had told me years ago: just because something is written down doesn’t mean it’s worth reading. I used to treat every article like it was gospel. If a website looked polished and the headline was punchy, I’d dive right in, assuming the person behind it knew what they were talking about.

Then I started paying closer attention. I noticed that some of the pages I kept landing on weren’t really written by anyone at all — or at least, not by anyone who showed their face, shared their experience, or stood behind their words. Just a name, a generic bio, and a lot of vague advice that could have been about anything.

It reminded me of that one friend we all have who gives advice with total confidence but has never actually been through the thing they’re advising you on. You nod along, and later you think, wait — why did I listen to that?

So now I ask myself a few simple questions before I give a page my attention:

Can I tell who wrote this, and do they seem like a real person?

Do they share actual experiences, or just general statements?

Would I trust this person’s advice if we were chatting at a coffee shop?

If the answer is no, I close the tab. No guilt. My time is precious, and so is yours.

What I Look For Instead

Once I started being pickier, something funny happened — I actually started enjoying what I read again. Instead of skimming ten shallow articles, I’d find one piece that made me stop and think. One that felt like a conversation instead of a lecture.

These days, I’m drawn to writers who show their mess. The ones who admit they tried something and it flopped. The ones who say “here’s what worked for me, but your mileage may vary.” That honesty is worth more than a hundred perfectly polished how-to posts.

I also pay attention to whether the writing respects me. Does it assume I’m smart? Does it explain things without talking down to me? Does it leave room for me to disagree? If a piece treats me like a friend rather than a customer, I’m in.

And honestly? Sometimes the best thing I read all week is a comment section or a short personal note from someone who’s just figuring it out alongside me. Perfection is overrated. Realness is everything.

A Little Reminder for Both of Us

I’m not saying every single thing you read needs to be life-changing. Sometimes you just want to scroll and zone out, and that’s completely fine. I do it too. But when I’m actually looking for guidance — for answers, for comfort, for a new perspective — I want to spend that time with people who’ve earned my trust.

So the next time you find yourself clicking through link after link, pause for a second. Ask yourself if this is feeding you or just filling time. You deserve writing that makes you feel seen, not just occupied.

I’m still learning this one, honestly. I still get sucked in sometimes. But I’m getting better at protecting my attention, and it’s made the good stuff shine so much brighter.

Here’s to reading things that actually matter — and to trusting your own gut about what’s worth your time. 🤍

The Moment I Realized I Was Reading the Wrong Things Last Tuesday I was curled up on the couch with my second cup of coffee, scrolling through my phone, when I caught myself clicking on yet another article that promised to change my life in five minutes.
