I looked at myself in the mirror and thought, “Emma, what are you even doing?”

If you’ve ever fallen down a rabbit hole of product reviews, comparison charts, and “life-changing” recommendations only to end up more confused than when you started, this one’s for you. Because I’ve been there. Honestly, I’m still there sometimes. And I think that’s okay.

The Messy Truth About Testing Products

Here’s something nobody tells you about being a lifestyle blogger: testing products is not glamorous. It’s messy. It’s overwhelming. And half the time, I have no idea what I’m doing.

I once spent an entire Saturday comparing three different planners because I convinced myself that the “right” one would somehow fix my chaotic schedule. I made a spreadsheet. A spreadsheet, you guys. With color coding. And you know what happened? I used it for two weeks and then went back to scribbling notes on the back of receipts like a raccoon digging through a trash can.

The thing is, I used to think that if I just researched enough, compared enough, read enough reviews, I’d find the perfect thing. The perfect product. The perfect routine. The perfect version of my life.

Spoiler alert: that’s not how it works.

What I’ve learned is that testing products is really just testing yourself. It’s figuring out what actually fits into your real life — not the life you wish you had, or the life that Instagram makes you think you should have. It’s asking yourself hard questions like:

Will I actually use this, or will it collect dust on my shelf?

Does this make my day easier, or does it just look good in photos?

Am I buying this because I need it, or because someone else said I should want it?

Those questions changed everything for me. And honestly, they’re still changing things.

Why I Stopped Chasing “Best” and Started Finding “Right”

I used to be obsessed with finding the best. The best skincare routine, the best productivity app, the best book, the best life hack. I’d read every comparison post, watch every review video, and still end up paralyzed because there was always another option I hadn’t considered.

Then one day, my friend Maya said something that stopped me in my tracks. She said, “Emma, what if the best thing is just the thing that works for you right now?”

It sounds so simple, right? But it hit me like a ton of bricks.

I realized I’d been treating my life like a never-ending product comparison. Always looking for the upgrade, always thinking the next thing would be better. And in the process, I was missing out on actually living with the things I already had.

So I started doing something different. Instead of asking “Is this the best?” I started asking “Is this right for me, right now?”

And let me tell you, that shift changed everything.

I stopped buying planners I’d never use and started using a simple notes app that actually fits my brain.

I stopped chasing every viral skincare product and started paying attention to what my skin actually likes.

I stopped comparing myself to people whose lives look nothing like mine and started building a life that feels like mine.

It’s not always easy. The comparison trap is real, and I fall into it more often than I’d like to admit. But I’m getting better at catching myself. At asking, “Wait, do I actually want this, or am I just afraid of missing out?”

The Little Things That Actually Make Life Easier

Here’s the thing about life hacks and tools and guides — the ones that actually work are rarely the flashy ones. They’re the small, unglamorous things that quietly make your day a little smoother.

For me, it’s been things like:

Keeping a running list of “things that actually help” in my phone — little reminders of what works when I’m overwhelmed.

Having a go-to meal that takes ten minutes and doesn’t require a recipe (mine is a weird but delicious rice bowl situation).

Setting my phone to “do not disturb” for the first hour of my morning, so I can actually hear my own thoughts before the world barges in.

Keeping a book by my bed that has nothing to do with work or self-improvement — just something that makes me happy.

None of these are groundbreaking. But that’s kind of the point. The best tools and guides and hacks aren’t the ones that promise to transform your entire life overnight. They’re the ones that make today a little bit easier, and then tomorrow a little easier than that.

I’ve also learned to be picky about what I let into my life. Not everything deserves my time, my energy, or my money. And that’s not being difficult — that’s being intentional.

What I Want You to Take Away From All This

If there’s one thing I hope you get from this messy, honest, slightly rambling post, it’s this: you don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t have to find the best thing. You don’t have to test every product or read every guide or compare every option until you’re exhausted.

You just have to find what’s right for you. Right now. In this season of your life. And then give yourself permission to change your mind later if it stops working.

I’m still learning this. I still catch myself scrolling through reviews at midnight, wondering if there’s something better out there. But more and more, I’m learning to close the tab, take a breath, and trust myself. Trust that I know what I need. Trust that the right thing will find me, or I’ll find it, or maybe I already have it and I just need to notice.

Life isn’t a product comparison. It’s not a spreadsheet or a review or a “best of” list. It’s just life. Messy and imperfect and sometimes overwhelming, but also kind of beautiful when you stop trying to optimize it and start trying to live it.

So here’s to finding what works for you — not what works for everyone else. Here’s to the little things that make a big difference. Here’s to being honest about the mess, and gentle with yourself in the middle of it.

You’re doing better than you think. And you’re not alone in any of it. 🤍

I still remember the night I sat cross-legged on my bathroom floor at 11 p.m., surrounded by five different “miracle” serums, a half-empty mug of cold tea, and a face mask that was slowly sliding off my chin.
