Yeah. That was me last Tuesday night, cozy in my oversized cardigan, tea going cold beside me, wondering how I ended up on a page that seemed to be… well, just a bunch of links.

I’d stumbled onto one of those sites that has everything and nothing all at once — about us, contact, privacy policy, terms of service, cookie policy, affiliate disclosure, checkout pages, login pages, pricing plans, switching plans wizards, menu pages for lifestyle and news. My brain did that little spinny thing. You know the one.

And it got me thinking about something I’ve been chewing on for a while now: how much of our online lives is just… navigation? We’re always clicking, always moving toward something, always one more link away from wherever we think we’re supposed to be. But are we ever actually arriving?

The Rabbit Hole Is Real (And I Fell Right In)

Here’s the thing about me — I’m a curious person by nature. Give me a website with a menu that branches into six different directions and I will click every single one. It’s a problem. My partner calls it “Emma’s treasure hunt mode” and honestly, he’s not wrong.

So there I was, clicking through a site that felt like it was built by someone who really, really wanted to cover every possible base. About us? Click. Disclaimer and terms? Sure, why not. Terms of services (plural, because apparently one set wasn’t enough)? Click. Contact us? Click. Privacy policy? Click. Terms of service again, but this time with a different timestamp? Okay, now I’m just confused.

And then the real fun began — checkout pages, my account pages, login and register pages, pricing plans modals, switching plans wizards, menu pages for lifestyle and news. It was like walking through a house where every door leads to another door, and none of them lead to an actual room.

I sat back in my chair and laughed out loud. Because honestly? This is the internet in a nutshell, isn’t it?

What I Actually Learned From My Accidental Website Adventure

After I closed that tab (and opened three more, because I have no self-control), I started thinking about what this little adventure taught me. And surprisingly, there were some real takeaways hidden in all those hyperlinks.

We’re all just looking for the “real” page. Whether it’s a website or our actual lives, we keep clicking toward something that feels more solid, more true, more like the place we’re supposed to be. But sometimes the journey is the point.

Too many options can be paralyzing. When I saw all those menu options — lifestyle menu, news menu, modal menu — I felt that familiar overwhelm. The same thing happens when I’m standing in the cereal aisle or scrolling through Netflix. More isn’t always better.

The fine print matters, but so does the big picture. Privacy policies, terms of service, disclaimers — they’re important, sure. But if I spend all my time reading the fine print, I’ll never actually live the story.

Sometimes you just need to close the tab. Not everything requires my attention. Not every link needs clicking. And that’s okay. That’s actually a relief.

I think about this a lot in my offline life too. How many “tabs” do I have open in my brain at any given moment? The grocery list, the work deadline, the friend I need to text back, the workout I skipped, the book I’m not reading, the hobby I keep meaning to start. It’s exhausting just thinking about it.

The Art of Choosing Where to Land

Here’s what I’ve started doing since my little website adventure — and it’s made a bigger difference than I expected.

Every time I feel that pull to click one more link, read one more article, research one more thing before I make a decision, I pause. I ask myself: Am I moving toward something, or am I just moving?

Because there’s a difference. There really is.

Moving toward something means I have a destination in mind, even if it’s fuzzy. Moving just to move means I’m avoiding the scary part — the part where I actually have to do the thing, write the thing, say the thing, be the thing.

I’ve started applying this to everything. My inbox. My social media scrolling. My endless search for the perfect planner, the perfect routine, the perfect morning ritual. At some point, I have to stop researching and start living.

And you know what? The view from here is pretty nice. Less cluttered. Less noisy. More room for the things that actually matter — like that cold cup of tea I finally remembered to drink, and the friend who called while I was mid-rabbit-hole, and the fact that I don’t need to read every privacy policy on the internet to feel okay about my choices.

So here’s my gentle challenge for you this week: notice when you’re clicking just to click. Notice when you’re scrolling just to scroll. And then — kindly, gently — close the tab. Close ten tabs. Close the whole browser if you need to.

The page you’re actually looking for? It’s probably not on a website at all. It’s right here, in the quiet space you create when you stop searching for a minute and just… land.

I’m still a work in progress on this one. I’ll probably fall down another rabbit hole tomorrow. But at least now I know I can climb back out. And that feels like something worth bookmarking. 🤍

You know that feeling when you’re three hours deep into a website rabbit hole and you suddenly realize you’ve scrolled past seventeen links without clicking a single one?
