I was sitting here the other night, scrolling through my phone, and I had this sudden, overwhelming urge to buy a new planner. You know the feeling — that little thrill of a fresh start, all those blank pages just begging for perfectly color-coded schedules. I had it in my cart, I was literally one click away, and then I stopped. I looked at the pile of half-used notebooks on my desk and thought, why do I keep doing this to myself?

That’s when it hit me. I spend so much time chasing the “best” version of everything — the best planner, the best serum, the best life hack — that I forget to ask the one question that actually matters: is this the right thing for me? And honestly? That realization has been a game-changer. So today, I wanted to get real with you all about this messy, wonderful, confusing process of figuring out what actually works, and how I finally stopped letting the overwhelm win.

The Comparison Trap (And How I Crawled Out of It)

I’m sure you know the drill. You see a friend raving about a new skincare routine, and suddenly your entire bathroom cabinet feels like a betrayal. Or you read a blog post (like this one, ha!) about someone’s “life-changing” productivity system, and you feel a tiny pang of guilt that you’re still using a sticky note on your monitor. I have been there, friends. I have bought the expensive vitamin C serum that broke me out, and I have downloaded the minimalist organization app only to delete it three days later because it gave me more anxiety than it saved.

Here’s the thing I’ve learned: those “best of” lists and “ultimate guides” are great for inspiration, but they’re terrible for comparison. They’re showing you a highlight reel, not the messy middle. I remember one time I was convinced I needed a specific, very expensive blender because every wellness influencer swore by it. I saved up, bought it, and guess what? I used it twice. The cheap one I had before made perfectly good smoothies. I just got caught up in the story that I needed the “best” to be my best self. It’s a total myth.

So, what do I do now? I’ve started treating these guides like a buffet, not a prescription. I take a little bit of what looks good, I leave the rest, and I never, ever feel bad about it. I’m the only one who has to live with my choices, after all.

My Honest, Not-So-Pretty Product Testing Process

You guys, I have to confess something. My “product testing” process is not scientific. It’s not glamorous. It usually involves me forgetting I ordered something, finding it in a drawer a month later, and then trying it with very low expectations. And you know what? That’s kind of perfect.

When I don’t have the pressure of a “first impression” or a “review deadline,” I can actually just live with the thing. I can see if it makes my morning routine easier, or if it just sits there collecting dust. I’ve had products that I was so excited about that I forced myself to like them, even when they were clearly not working. I’ve also had unassuming little finds — a specific type of drawer organizer, a weirdly comfortable pair of slippers — that have genuinely changed my day-to-day life in ways I never expected.

I think the key is to lower the stakes. It’s just a thing. It’s not a reflection of my worth. If a tool, guide, or book doesn’t make my life easier or happier, it’s not a failure — it’s just not for me. And that’s okay. I’ve started to find so much more joy in the “little things” — the simple hacks that save me five minutes of frustration, or the book that I couldn’t put down — than in any grand, expensive overhaul.

Finding My “Right” (And Letting Go of “Best”)

So, how do I actually choose now? I’ve stopped asking “what’s the best?” and started asking “what’s right for my life, right now?” It sounds simple, but it’s a huge shift. The “best” is often the most expensive, the most popular, or the most aesthetically pleasing. The “right” is the one that fits into my actual, messy, real life.

For me, that looks like a few things:

I ask about the “friction test.” Does this make my life easier or harder? If it requires too much effort to set up or maintain, it’s a no, no matter how good it looks on paper.

I give myself permission to change my mind. Just because I loved something last year doesn’t mean I have to keep using it. My life changes, and my tools should change with it.

I trust my gut. If I have to talk myself into liking something, that’s a huge red flag. The right thing usually just feels… right. It doesn’t need a persuasive argument.

I embrace the “good enough.” Sometimes, the perfect solution is the enemy of the good one. I’d rather have a system that works 80% of the time than chase a mythical 100% that never comes.

It’s a constant work in progress, honestly. I still get sucked into the hype sometimes. I still have moments where I think, “Oh, maybe this will be the thing that fixes everything.” But I’m getting better at catching myself. I’m learning to be more curious and less judgmental, both with the products I try and with myself.

At the end of the day, this isn’t really about planners or blenders or productivity apps. It’s about giving ourselves the same grace we give our best friends. It’s about saying, “You’re doing great, and you don’t need to have it all figured out.” The goal isn’t to have the best stuff; it’s to have a life that feels good, and to find the little things that make it a little bit easier, a little bit cozier, and a whole lot more you. And that, my friends, is a journey I’m happy to be on with you. 🤍

Okay, can we just take a moment?
