I was scrolling through my phone the other day, half-watching a rerun of some show I’ve seen a million times, and I stumbled down this rabbit hole of old blog posts and website templates. And I don’t mean the pretty, curated ones. I mean the clunky ones. The ones with the weird little tag icons and the dates that look like they were generated by a robot who has never felt the warmth of the sun.

And I laughed out loud, because it hit me: we all have those digital skeletons in our closet, don’t we? Those messy, half-finished projects, those abandoned ideas, those little corners of the internet that we started with so much hope and then… just let sit there, gathering virtual dust. It’s like that drawer in your kitchen where you throw all the random takeout menus and rubber bands. You know it’s a mess, but you also kind of love it because it’s yours.

So today, I wanted to chat about that. Not about the technical side of things—because, let’s be real, I am not the girl who can code her way out of a paper bag—but about the messy, human side of having a little corner of the web. The good, the bad, and the “why did I think that font was a good idea?”

The “What Was I Thinking?” Phase

I remember when I first started my blog. I was so excited. I had this vision of crisp white backgrounds, elegant serif fonts, and photos that looked like they belonged in a magazine. And then I actually sat down to build it. Oh, honey. It was a disaster. I spent three hours trying to figure out how to change the color of a single line of text. I almost cried when I accidentally deleted my entire sidebar. My husband found me staring at the screen, whispering, “It’s okay, it’s okay,” like I was trying to calm a spooked horse.

And you know what? That messy, frustrating, “what was I thinking” phase is so important. It’s like learning to cook. Your first few attempts are going to be burnt, or undercooked, or taste vaguely like cardboard. But you learn. You figure out what works. You discover that maybe you don’t need that complicated widget, and that sometimes the simplest layout is the most beautiful.

I think we put so much pressure on ourselves to have everything perfect from the very first click. We compare our behind-the-scenes chaos to everyone else’s highlight reel. But that’s not fair to us. That’s not how anything good is ever made. So if you have an old project that makes you cringe a little, I want you to give yourself a high-five. That cringe is proof that you’ve grown.

Finding Your Little Corner of the Internet

There’s something so special about having a place that’s just… yours. Not your Instagram feed, where you’re performing for an algorithm. Not your Facebook, where your aunt comments on every single photo. But a little nook where you can just be. For me, that’s this blog. It’s where I get to ramble about my morning coffee, the new recipe I tried, or the fact that I finally found a concealer that doesn’t crease.

And it’s okay if your corner isn’t fancy. I have a friend who keeps a private blog that literally no one reads. She uses it to post photos of her garden and write little notes to her future self. It’s her digital diary, her little time capsule. Another friend has a website for her dog, complete with a “About Me” section written from the dog’s perspective. Is it silly? Absolutely. Does it bring her joy? More than anything.

That’s the magic of it. It doesn’t have to be for anyone else. It can just be for you. It can be a messy, beautiful, chaotic reflection of who you are at that exact moment. And you know what? That’s more than enough.

If you’re thinking about starting something—a blog, a portfolio, a little online shop—I say go for it. Don’t wait until you have the perfect name or the perfect logo. Just start. Use a free template. Write a messy first post. Take a terrible photo with your phone. Just get something out there into the world. You can always polish it later. The hardest part is just hitting “publish” for the first time.

My Honest Takeaway

So here’s the thing I’ve learned from all those late nights staring at a blinking cursor and all those moments of wanting to throw my laptop out the window: it’s not about the platform, the design, or the traffic. It’s about the act of creating. It’s about showing up for yourself, even when it’s messy. Even when you have no idea what you’re doing. Even when you feel like you’re just shouting into the void.

Because that void? It’s not empty. It’s full of other people who are also figuring it out, who are also making mistakes, who are also just trying to find their people. And when you share your imperfect, honest self, you give them permission to do the same. That’s a pretty beautiful thing, if you ask me.

So here’s my little challenge for you this week: find that old, dusty project. Or start a brand new one. Don’t worry about making it perfect. Just make it you. Add that silly photo. Write that rambling paragraph. Use that font that makes you happy, even if it’s a little weird. The internet is a big place, and there’s room for all of us—messy bits and all.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with my own old template and a cup of tea. I think it’s time for a little makeover. Wish me luck.

🤍

Okay, can we just take a moment?
