Have you ever found yourself down a rabbit hole, clicking from one blog to the next, and suddenly you’re three hours deep reading about someone’s kitchen renovation or their dog’s anxiety? No? Just me? Well, I was doing exactly that the other day, and I stumbled upon this little corner of the internet that just felt… different. It wasn’t loud or salesy. It was just honest. And it got me thinking about all the little things we chase in our daily lives that we think will make us happier, but honestly, they just add noise.

So, I grabbed my second (okay, third) cup of coffee, and I started jotting down my own thoughts. Not about productivity hacks or “10 Ways to Crush Your Goals Before 7 AM” (yawn), but about the real, messy, beautiful stuff. The stuff that actually makes a house feel like a home and a day feel like it was worth living. Let’s chat about it, shall we?

Letting Go of the “Perfect” Pinterest Life

I have a confession. I used to be obsessed with making my home look like it belonged in a magazine. I’m talking perfectly fluffed throw pillows (that no one was allowed to touch), a coffee table with exactly three artfully arranged books, and a kitchen counter that was always spotless. It was exhausting. I was basically a museum curator for a house that no one was allowed to live in.

Then, one rainy Tuesday, my best friend came over with her two kids. Within five minutes, there was a crayon mark on the wall, a juice box spilled on the rug, and the throw pillows were being used as a fort. And you know what? I didn’t freak out. I took a breath, and I realized that the house looked lived in. It looked loved. It looked like us.

I think we put so much pressure on ourselves to curate these perfect spaces and perfect lives for the ‘gram, that we forget to actually enjoy them. We forget that the best memories are usually made in the mess. So, my first little tip, if you can call it that, is to give yourself permission to let go. Let the pillows be a little squished. Leave the dishes for the morning. Go outside and watch the sunset instead of cleaning the baseboards. I promise, the dust will still be there tomorrow, but that moment won’t be.

Finding the Magic in the Mundane

Here’s the thing I’ve been learning lately: happiness isn’t usually found in the big, grand gestures. It’s in the tiny, almost forgettable moments that make up the fabric of our days. It’s the smell of fresh coffee brewing before anyone else is awake. It’s the feeling of climbing into bed with freshly washed sheets. It’s that first bite of a really good sandwich when you’re starving. You know what I mean?

I read something recently that really stuck with me. It was about how we often rush through the “in-between” times, just waiting for the next big event—the vacation, the promotion, the weekend. But if we’re always waiting for the next thing, we’re missing out on the actual thing, which is right now. So, I’ve started trying to be more present. When I’m walking my dog, I try to actually look at the flowers instead of scrolling on my phone. When I’m making dinner, I try to enjoy the process of chopping the veggies and smelling the garlic sizzling in the pan.

It sounds so simple, and honestly, it kind of is. But it’s also really hard because our brains are wired to always look for the next distraction. Here are a few things that have been helping me slow down and soak it all in:

Put the phone in another room for at least 30 minutes a day. It’s scary, I know, but the world won’t end.

Actually sit down to eat. Not in the car, not standing over the sink, but at a table, with a real plate.

Take a “sensory shower.” Notice the temperature of the water, the smell of the soap, the steam. It’s a weirdly grounding experience.

Have a cup of tea (or coffee) without any screens. Just you, the mug, and your thoughts.

It’s like I’m finally learning to see the beauty that was always there, I was just too busy looking at my phone to notice it.

Giving Myself the Grace I Give Everyone Else

This is the big one, isn’t it? We are so good at being kind to our friends. When they mess up, we say, “It’s okay, you’re doing your best.” When they forget something, we laugh it off. But when we mess up? We beat ourselves up about it for days. We replay the conversation, we obsess over the mistake, we tell ourselves we’re not good enough.

I had a week recently where everything just went wrong. I forgot a friend’s birthday, I burned the toast, I said something I regretted in a meeting, and I just felt like a total failure. I was lying in bed, mentally listing all my flaws, when I thought, “Would I talk to my best friend this way?” And the answer was a resounding, “No way.” So why was I doing it to myself?

We have to start treating ourselves with the same compassion we offer so freely to others. We are all just out here trying our best, and sometimes our best is a hot mess. And that’s okay. It’s more than okay; it’s human. So, I’m trying to make a pact with myself. When I mess up, I’m going to take a deep breath and say, “Okay, that happened. What can I learn from it?” and then I’m going to move on. I’m not going to let one bad moment ruin my whole day, or my whole week, or my whole sense of self-worth.

It’s a work in progress, for sure. Some days I’m great at it, and other days I’m back to being my own worst critic. But I’m trying, and that counts for something, right?

So, here’s my takeaway after all this rambling. Life isn’t about perfection. It’s about connection—to ourselves, to each other, and to the little moments that make it all worthwhile. It’s about giving ourselves a break and remembering that the messy, imperfect, beautifully chaotic life we’re living right now is the only one we’ve got. Let’s try to enjoy it, shall we? 🤍

Okay, so let’s be real for a second.
