I was cleaning out my inbox the other day (a rare and terrifying event, I know) and I stumbled upon a folder I’d completely forgotten about. It was just a jumble of links and notes I’d saved for “later” — you know, that magical time that never actually comes. And as I was scrolling through, I realized something: I had no idea what half of these websites even were, let alone why I’d saved them.

It got me thinking about all the digital clutter we carry around. The bookmarks, the saved posts, the “read later” articles that we never read. We’re all walking around with these invisible piles of stuff, and honestly? It’s exhausting. So today, I wanted to chat about that. About the mess we don’t see, and the tiny, freeing little steps we can take to clear it all out.

The Great Inbox Purge (And Why It Feels So Good)

Let’s start with the inbox, because that’s where the chaos really lives for me. I had over 4,000 unread emails. Four. Thousand. And I’m not even a person who gets that much important mail! It was all newsletters I signed up for in a moment of “ooh, free PDF!” and promotional emails from brands I bought one thing from in 2019.

So, I did something drastic. I didn’t try to read them all. That’s a trap. Instead, I just did a massive search for “unsubscribe” and spent one solid afternoon clicking that button on everything that didn’t spark genuine joy. It was like a digital Marie Kondo session. And let me tell you, the next morning when I opened my email and saw only the things that actually mattered? I almost cried. It was such a small act, but it felt like I’d cleaned a physical room in my house.

And it’s not just about email. Think about all the little digital promises we make ourselves. The apps on our phones we never open. The notes app full of half-baked ideas. The photos of screenshots of things we meant to buy. It’s all just… noise. And that noise takes up space in our brains, even when we don’t realize it.

Your Browser Is a Hoarder’s Paradise (Let’s Fix That)

Now, let’s talk about the browser bookmarks. This is where I’m really guilty. I have a bookmark folder called “Recipes” that has 200+ links in it. Do I use it? No. I just Google the same recipes over and over again. The folder is a graveyard of good intentions.

So here’s what I did, and I want you to try it too. I opened my bookmarks bar and I asked myself one simple question for each link: “Would I click this today?” If the answer was no, I deleted it. No mercy. I deleted the article about “10 Ways to Organize Your Closet” (I still haven’t organized my closet). I deleted the link to that weird tool I thought I’d use for work (I didn’t). I deleted the recipe for a cake I was never going to bake.

It was scary at first. I felt like I was losing information. But then I realized, I wasn’t losing anything. I was just admitting that I wasn’t going to use it. And that’s okay. It’s more than okay, it’s liberating. The same goes for the apps on my phone. I went from five pages of apps to two. I deleted the games I never play, the shopping apps that just tempt me, and the fitness trackers that made me feel guilty. My phone feels lighter now. I know that sounds silly, but it’s true.

Start small: Pick one digital space (email, bookmarks, or phone apps) and tackle just that.

Ask the one question: “Would I use this today?” If not, it’s gone.

Don’t organize, just delete: Trying to sort 4,000 emails into folders is a trap. Just get rid of them.

Unsubscribe ruthlessly: Every newsletter that doesn’t make you smile is just a tiny weight on your shoulders.

Embrace the “lost” feeling: You won’t miss it. I promise. You’ll just feel lighter.

The Real Reason We Hold On (It’s Not About the Files)

I think the real reason we hold onto all this digital stuff is that we’re afraid of missing out. We’re afraid that if we delete that link, we’ll lose some crucial piece of information that we’ll need someday. But the truth is, we don’t. We never do. The internet is a big place, and if we ever really need that information, we can find it again in two seconds.

I had a moment the other day where I was looking for a specific article I’d saved months ago. I couldn’t find it, and I felt a little panic. But then I just Googled the topic, and guess what? I found a better article. The one I’d saved was probably outdated anyway. It’s like holding onto a pair of jeans from high school. They’re not going to fit, and they’re not even in style anymore. Let them go.

This whole process has been a lesson in being present for me. When I cleared out my digital space, I felt more present in my real life. I wasn’t constantly thinking about the pile of “to-dos” I had saved somewhere. I was just… here. And that’s a pretty great feeling.

So, my challenge to you this week is to pick one thing. Just one. Maybe it’s your email inbox, maybe it’s your phone’s photo library, maybe it’s that folder of bookmarks you’ve been ignoring. Spend 20 minutes just cleaning it out. Don’t think, just delete. And then close your laptop, take a deep breath, and enjoy the quiet. You’ve earned it. 🤍

Okay, so I have to be totally honest with you guys.
